At Medical Eye Associates, Dr. Mont Cartwright and staff like to make sure that all of our patients questions have been answered. Here are a few of the most frequently asked questions. If you do not see the answer to your question here please call or e-mail us.
What do I need to bring to my first visit? On your first visit to Medical Eye Associates we ask that you bring the following:
- Your glasses for both reading and distance
- All drops that you currently use
- A list of the medication you are currently taking
- Your current insurance cards
- A list of your allergies
This will help your visit run smoothly
What is a Visual Field Test? A visual field test measures how much 'side' vision you have. It is a straightforward test, painless, and does not involve eye drops. Essentially lights are flashed on, and you have to press a button whenever you see the light. Your head is kept still. You have to rest your chin on a chin rest. The lights are bright or dim at different stages of the test. Some of the flashes are purely to check you are concentrating.
What is a Fluorescein angiography? This is a test which allows the blood vessels at the back of the eye to be photographed as a fluorescent dye is injected into the bloodstream via your hand or arm. It is used to:
- To help the doctor confirm a diagnosis.
- To provide guidelines for treatment.
- To keep a permanent record of the vessels at the back of the eye
- How long of a wait do I have untill I see the doctor?
What is a Serial Tonometry? During the Serial Tonomery test the pressure in both eyes are taken at various times through out the day. This gives the doctor a more accurate messure of how your eye pressures flucuate through out the day. It helps the doctor confirm diagnosis and provides a guidline for treatment.
Will you Dialate my eyes on my first visit? Yes, it is very likely that you will have your eyes dialated on your first visit. What this means is that you will have eye drops put in to make the pupil of the eye bigger so the back of the eye may be examined. The drops take 20 minutes to work, so will be asked to leave the examination room and will be called in later. At the end of your examination you will be given the option of having drops put in to help reverse the dialation. These make your sight blurred, and is generally best not to drive. These will take a minimum of 15 minutes to work and speeds up the reversal process. You will be sensitive to light so please bring dark sunglasses.
